Mathews Timber (ask for Ian Neal) in Melb stock NG Ebony. Be warned though its very expensive. I bowled up and grapped a beautiful piece 800mm long 65mmx65mm. Put it back in the rack when the guy told me it was 360 bucks. Bet the NG harvesters don't get that for it.

I pretty much felt the same way about Mathew's pricing for their stock of Ebony. Each board is numbered and individually measured and priced. It is as if they were precious stones.
T'was silly of me to ask, but I just had to - cost per cubic metre was quoted at $88,000 (if I recall correctly). To add insult to injury he then said "plus GST"
Holy Guacamole! At those prices, I reckon it'd cheaper to get something from North America and have it mailed out.

Carbatec had some too and it was about the same price. To Mathews credit though they did admit it was very overpriced and the stock they had had been sitting there since September last year. Apparently luthiers buy it in small quantities for musical instruments. I did buy some snakewood at Carbatec though. 150mm x 50mm x 12mm for 21 bucks. I think that works out around 140,000 bucks a cube....

$233,333 a cube, actually. The problem is that the purchase price of the timber is only one component of the cost structure of the supplier. The smaller the piece, the larger in proportion the cost of overheads. That's why Otto sells olive wood for over $30,000 a cube and I give it away...

I'm weeping too, but that's how the world works... . Cheer up, the Japanese pay about that much for tuna. On second thougth: can't cheer up, they poach it around here. Oh, well, I'll have another beer to cheer up!
