Where to buy some Paulownia
G'day. I know this question gets asked fairly regularly - and I have done a search - but I'm after up-to-date information. Does anyone know where I can buy some Paulownia in Sydney, Central Coast or Newcastle. I only want enough to make a smallish cabinet - actually a display cabinet which will sit on top of a desk.
Now I know that there are places where I can buy Paulownia by mail or website, but I"m not comfortable with that. Firstly because the freight would probably cost more then the timber, and second because if I run out I can go back and get a bit more - and I find I always run out when I'm making a project no matter how carefully I measure and no matter what contingency I allow.
I've been inspired by looking at kiri boxes from Japan. Now I'm thinking I'd like to make a cabinet out of very white wood, and keeping it unfinished. Just a small thing about 600x400x300, probably with 2 flattish drawers and a flip top lid.
Prefer about 12mm thick dar.
cheers

Paulownia retailers
Arron,
The demand for Paulownia at the current time does not warrant a 'chain' of retailers. If you want Paulownia you will have to buy it from a web site, like mine and get it sent to you. The dimensions of your project would allow for the timber to be sent by Australia post which is cheaper than the couriers, who handle parcels over 1 metre.
From my point of view the profit from the effort I need to make up an order for you of say $50.00 of timber is not good business sense. Having said that If you want to contact me I'll prepare you some timber. I'll add $16.50 P & H and only charge you what I have to pay Aust Post.

See whitewood!!!! he will sort ya out.
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.
Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

OK, thanks for providing the explanation. It seems that if I want it at all then it has to be a web purchase.
What I would prefer is that you just published what your minimum order is, from a business point of view, and I will work to that. I'm not after special treatment or a favour, I just want to do business in the normal way.
cheers

Paulownia
Arron,
I was not offering you a special deal. I sell the timber and I advertise a price per metre. The smallest order was for $7.00 so a guy in Perth could make a fin for his surfboard. I do cutting list for guys to make small sail boats and they also take a lot of time. This is because I don't store dressed timber and do each order individually. Also I dress on a single sided thicknesser because the size of the business doesn't warrant a 4 bladed spindle moulder that takes an hour to set up. I don't depend on the Paulownia for a living, thank god or I'd starve. I'm interested in promoting the timber because I think it is great for specific purposes not just surfboards and plantation shutters.
It is ideal for your cabinet and I'm happy to supply what you need and I would do my best to select suitable timber. If I charged a minimum cost then added P & H (again I don't cover time and costs) and freight / postage has a basic fee then a per kg component the cost of the timber would be far too expensive.
If you want some Paulownia then have a look at my web site and send me a list of what you want. I'll work out the cost of the timber and even estimate postage and give you a price. You can make up your mind from there. Perhaps you could put a photo of the finished cabinet on the forum so members can see what Paulownia looks like. I might even get some more orders out of it.

OK, thats understood. I'll shoot you an email when I'm done designing my cabinet.
It could be a while though as my design skills are virtually non-existent.
cheers
