Carlingford, Sydney - what is going on
anyone familiar with Carlingford, in Sydney. On Jenkins road, near the corner of Post Office Road, there appears to be an informal wood exchange going on. On the side of the road there is a spot where people are dumping dozens of pieces of green timber - mostly rounds, but a few longer logs. Other people are picking them up for firewood. There are also a few ratty old sleepers. There is a sign nailed to a standing dead tree asking people not to dump anything that cant be split because someone is 'getting sick of cleaning up the mess'.
Sydney is a pretty lousy place for 'urban lumbering', so the species mix is pretty ordinary, mostly camphor laurel, liquidamber and various eucalypts. I expect if I keep watching something decent will turn up.
Anyone know what is going on here ?

Basoon's correct. Camphor Laurel is a great timber for boxes etc. Not too bad to work either. Sand to 1200 and Organoil, then sponsors wax.
Tried Shellac but came out looking awful; dowdy and funereal.
Also tried turning but didn't enjoy it much, possibily lack of skill, good lathe and tools. Won't do it again.Bodgy

Hi Bodgy, I'm surprised! Shellac on Camphor Laurel didn't turn out for you?????? or did it not give you the look you wanted?? I've used white shellac very successfully on Camphor Laurel, but no other types yet.
Arron - Totally agree with the other comments - grab that Camphor Laurel. It does indeed make beautiful boxes and many other things.
cheers

Some urban grown Camphor Laurel is completely featureless - probably too much water & fertilizer. Stuff that has had to struggle a bit is alleged to have more character.

The finish was all shiny etc, but I used UB Orange? Shellac and the brown finish looks awful on the CL. I can see that white shellac would be better.
Preference remains the Organoil, but you really have to go right down to 1200 grit to get the look.

Just about sums up our backyard, the CL I have was from there and is absolutely full of figure. Dividends from neglect.Bodgy
