    Default Dead Finish (Red Lancewood)

Stopped at a free camp just west of Longreach and found someone cutting down some dead trees for firewood. I was amazed to find it was Dead Finish and there were 3 more dead trees nearby. The government has been doing a eradication program of poisoning off the Prickly Wattle, and as there were many nearby, I can only assume the poison has spread and killed the Dead Finish too.

So I couldn't help myself from saving a few chunks from the fire.

The stuff that they are poisoning is actually Prickly Acacia (Vachellia nilotica), not Prickly Wattle (Acacia tetragonophylla.)

The colour in those logs will slowly fade once it is exposed.

The first is a introduced weed (once an Acacia) probably came in with camel packs in 1800s... the second a native species.

Agree. Sadly that bright heartwood colour does fade, on exposure to light especially

I did manage to convince another tree to jump into the car before I left the camp

    Hello Neil
That looks stunning. Funny how camps sites have timber like that. A property I shoot on we were burning dead York Gum and Jam, burns and smell magnificent
I think of you every time I turn the Dead Finish you gave me, love the stuff.
    Cheers
