Anybody want to form timber buying co-op for Brisbane auctions?
Hi
I have attended a few auctions for timber at the Gray Eisdell Martin auctions held at their centre near Archerfield airport.
A lot of stuff goes for dirt cheap, but is in too large quantities for me to purchase by myself. For example, a lot of the decking stuff they sell would be great for making furniture, but I just don't have the room to store the large bundles they tend to sell it in.
If a few of us got together, then we would be able to buy a large bundle and split it between us.
I particularly would like to buy some Kwilla p/round decking in 90 x 19 for making outdoor furniture, but not 500 L/M, as they often sell it.
PS. I am also placing this in the buy/sell section of the forum, as I don't know where it should go.

What sort of prices and quantities are you talking? And what sort of timber?

So maybe three people interested so far?
I have been to about 8 of their auctions of the past 12 months, and they are always held on a Tuesday morning. The company is Gray Eisdell Martin, and the location is 85 Colebard St, Archerfield. They advertise in the Saturday courier mail, at the back of the business section.
The timber they auction off is mainly for building purposes, including every size and sort of pine you want, as well as heaps of flooring and decking in all the normal species used in SE Qld. They also often have engineered boards of various types. Sometimes they have some nice cabinet timber, but not much.
They have heaps of Kwila all the time in all forms, and that is what I am after at the moment. I want to get some Kwila decking, roughly 80 x 19, to use for various pieces of furniture I want to make. Quantities also vary a lot, but are normally too big for me to purchase alone, plus I don't have a truck to pick it up, so would need to hire a vehicle. Quantities could be anything from about 100 L/M to 800 L/M, but vary on the pack you get. Prices also vary off course, depending on the winning bid. For example, last week some 90 x 19 Kwila decking went for $1.95 per L/M, in packs of 360 L/M. There is always some bargain to be had.
I picked up some 88 x 32 Kwila for 20 cents/M, which sells retail for $11 - $13/M. They were all in 600 mm lengths and I got a pack of 146 m of it (in other words, up to $2000 worth of timber for $30. This of course an exception, but just an example. Don't know yet what I am going to do with 146 m of 600 x 88 x 32 Kwila, but one day I'll find a use for it I'm sure).
The hardest part of this deal would of course be bidding for the stuff that everybody would want, but if you want Kwila decking, then that would be a start.

Just a thought. Anybody interested in this deal, why not go out to one of their auctions on a Tuesday morning to see for yourself exactly what is on offer. I would recommend this to anyone before we actually get together and do some serious bidding. Have a look, and then send some feedback to this thread.
There should be a building materials auction this coming tuesday, but make sure you check the saturday courier mail for their ad. It will be in yellow colour near the end of the business section. I myself can't attend this one as I will be out of town.

Three or four maybes so far - Anybody else? No auction this coming Tuesday (12/7), next on Tuesday after.
I am kicking myself for not taking some Rosewood flooring at .50c/LM a couple of weeks ago. A steal compared to the normal $13 off.
Whats Hare & forbes?

With regrads the hares & forbges, a couple of days ago I went to a shop that sounds similar to this one. It was on boundary rd next to the post office. They sold halco or hefco stuff or something like that, and heaps of metal working stuff, but I was not particularly impressed with their gear. Would this be the same shop you are talking about?

Sorry for being a little slack on the replies. Been trying to organise a guard for my new saw. I am a shift worker and my roster is always all over the shop, so never exactly sure on when I am available. Trying to chase down some nice timber for a large table I am about to build, so like yourself not chasing the construction stuff. On call today, so might not be back until Friday, but will check the site over the coming week.
Cheers
Timmy
PS The Hare and Forbes shop is on Boundary road (I think). I thought most of the stuff there was not too bad...especially the steel gear ie. welders, pipe bending, metal cutting bandsaws. Also found the guys there really helpful. But before you buy I would really suggest you look at the tools thread on this web site. There is alot of really really good advice on machines. Infact some of the comments have influenced me on almost all my purchases.
