New gate has loose screws
Hi! this is my first use ever of a forum. I am David W from Brisbane.
A couple of months ago I built a timber gate for a back yard boundary fence. The frame is 75 x 38 Fence grade H3 hardwood. The palings are 100mm H3 pine. Now some of the batten screws are loose, with some needing a couple of full turns to tighen up again.
I suspect the reason is that the timber is still green. Next time would it be better to use say F14 hardwood and treat it myself with a pest control product.Last edited by DavidSW; 9th October 2009 at 12:01 PM. Reason: Clarity

I hope you used stainless or hot dipped galvanised screws, as all treated pine will eventually eat regular fasteners.
If the only screws to be coming loose are the ones holding the palings/battens to the main frame, and the ones holding the main frame together are still tight you've got me - maybe a bored kid with a new screwdriver?
If the battens are actually a structural part of the fence, holding the frame square, the gate might just be too big and will gradually sag to the ground as the strain will twist the screws in their holes, and eventually the holes will be made too big to hold the screws - if that is the case, there are two possible solutions - 1) use a galvanised wire rope, eyebolts & a turnbuckle to transfer the strain to the main gatepost at the hinge side, or 2) make it out of hardwood next time, or use a steel frame if you are worried about termites & can't get treated hardwood.

fence grade timber is green when sold.
f14 is green unless specified seasoned.
teh treatment process also swels the wood as teh treatment only works because teh liquid i forced into the timber
just tighten the screws up and itll be right.
that is the nature of timber im afraid.
