Hardwood fencing timber
Hi folks,
I've recently arrived from England where we don't use as much hardwood as you do out here, can anyone offer me any advice in choosing a hardwood thats cheap and enduring for a fence (posts rails and palings).
Someone already recommended the timber used in roofing batons.
cheers

I'd recommend Redgum (best) or Bloodwood (cheaper) for posts.
Cyprus Pine (I know it's not a hardwood, but it's the most often used) for palings.
Either timber can be used for the rails; Redgum/Bloodwood last longer, Cyprus is cheaper.

Cyprus pine seems to be the most used in Melbourne for both fence palings and posts, mainly 'cause it's easily available, comparitively cheap and, very important the bloody white ants/termites don't eat it!

timber
Hi ,
Yeah red gum will do just fine, dunno about roof batons all the ones I ve seen are pine.....snack food for termites. North Coast Hardwood is favoured here in Sydney and as you are in that part of the world it should not be a problem. Cyprus fine for paling is ok but not so good for stringers between the posts as it tends to bend or sag abit...yuo end up with a sway back fence...hmm might look alright if its even....

Thanks for the advice folks,
Thing about the pine option is he wants all hardwood fence.. doesn't want the treated pine look.. fair enough..
i've already got a decent price on the palings but rails and posts seem a bit exy around 20/m on the rails.. and 20 for a 2.4 m post
BTW this is an excellent site!
