Kiln Fumigated Timber
I recently came across some beautiful hardwoods in a junk shop. They were stamped with "Kiln Fumigated Timber" on the end. Does anyone know what the significance of this is? I have tried all the sources that I know of and was unable to get any satisfactory answers.
The timbers themselves are beautiful, I intend to use them for table legs, approx 1.5m long, 4"X4".
Thanks
Suresh

Not 100% sure of this one, but some countries (S. Korea) use a fumigation process with Methyl Bromide, which is applied in a kiln. Something to do with the heat and chemical combination being more effective against certain types of insects, borers etc. I think it is a fair bet your timber is imported and nothing is living in it !

While I haven't yet checked out the site recommended, I suspect that some wood from certain countries is fumigated prior to shipping probably due to some customs requirment.
Eg I purchased a bandsaw recently and while I still had the wood from the crate it was packed in still in the shed it stunk the place out.
