Outrigger arms
hey all,
In the near future I will be building (laminated, bent) outrigger arms. These are the 2 identical arms that attach to the canoe and outrigger.
What timbers would be a good choice. Im thinking something with long fibres? Am I correct in saying that spruce was used in mast building? Are they any Aussie timbers that would be suitable? Also availability is important as I live on the Gold Coast.
cheers,
Serg

You could use spotted gum & no need to laminate them as well, you can steam bend the timber to the desired curvature. Boat builders would use a length of steel pipe to boil water with spotted gum ribs in the water (one at a time), take them out & bend them around a jig to the required curve shape.

Outrigger
Is weight a serious consideration? If so do what the sail boat builders are doing for their spars and use ply to get your shape and paulownia inside.
