Pepper Tree - worthwhile timber?
Evening Gents and Gentresses.
An acquaintance has given me a section of what he calls Pepper Tree trunk. It's not real big - about 800mm long and about 170mm diameter. I know nothing about Pepper Trees, but he tells me that "every stock yard and sheep shed in NSW has a Pepper Tree growing around them".
He may be right as a bit of research shows "Pepper Tree" as a common "weed" of South American origin, also known as "Californian Pepper Tree", "Peppercorn Tree" and "Peruvian Mastic Tree". When I saw some photos I recognised it - especially the berries. See more details & photos etc at this link:
http://www.weeds.org.au/cgi-bin/weed...=tree&card=E37
Anyway, my question is - is it any good for woodworking generally or turning? Any experiences out there - anyone?Don't Just Do It.... Do It HardenFast!!

Its rubbish weed wood, chuck it away, the white resinous sap causes all sorts of problems too.

Here you go One of my first posts
I cut down a medium size tree (Invasive roots) and had a play with the wood, found it to be soft and kind of corky, may have been my tree? I still have some large pieces to play with. Oh, it also stinks by the way!The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

I was in outback NSW years ago, way past Broken Hill, beyond the blackest of black stumps known to modern man.
Anyway, we caught an old Peppercorn tree that had been down for ages.
Hmm thinks I, good firewood.
So I hitch it up to the F100 and drag it for miles to base camp.
I dragged it through the fire thinking this big trunk will last all of 2 weeks burning slowly.
Yep, burning nicely.....
Neat morning there was nothing left but a pile of ash.
Its rubbish wood...
Any wood worthy would have burnt for ages.

I can remember a peppercorn tree that was trimmed back when I was a kid, a log about 40cm across and 50cm long was left in a heap, dead ready for reserve fire wood. Two years later it spring a shoot and started growing again. Talk about a weed.

I gather this is a different tree to " rainbow peppercorn".

Many thanks for the comments, all. After reading through them I was about to send this piece to the father in law's firewood heap until I saw Mr Tit's post.
Excellent work Vern, by the way. Based on your finished result I'm going to have a closer look at the trunk section I've got before adding it to our national carbon dioxide output. Global Warming - what a crock!
I also appreciate the link to Australian Metal Powder Supplies. Did you get a pure brass powder, or the bronze alloy? What grade did you purchase? Also, did you end up finding a reasonable source for CA glue?
Do I have any more questions? Absolutely!Don't Just Do It.... Do It HardenFast!!
