    Default Silky Oak?

Can someone identify this for me is it Silky Oak?

I was going to use it as legs for a makeshift bench for my son but having run it over the jointer I think it might be better quality timber than I thought it was.

    I don't think so...
Does the newly planed surface have a waxy feel? or dry?

Maybe a maple of sorts... but that third pic has me thinking maybe... but not the other pics...?

more pics... the end grain tells no lies!

    It's dry.

I don't have a plane for the end grain so not sure if that pic will help much through the saw marks. I've added a couple of closer shots.

G'day HH I suspect it may be Durian as in the tropical fruit durian. I was given some pieces a while back and I believe it was imported from Indonesia.
The timber is light in weight and stringy and the end grain tears when being turned so sharp tools are a must.

HH, I forgot to add that I tried an oil finish on some, I forget which one now, and the wood went very dark and looked yuk.
If you have bits from the end of the cut log it will have black paint on it.

    Thanks Barry,

It was used as an internal banister rail in our house in Sydney. When we put in new floors and a step we removed the banister and I kept the timber of course. I have it in lengths up to about 4-5 metres.

The end grain does tear and it is fairly light, not quite cedar light though, sorry Wongo. A shade heavier than pine I'd say.
