    Default slicing thick timber

    Hi All,

I don't know if it is the rgiht forum to post this thread but I am assuming so
I have bought some premium wood from Eugene whose garage sale was and is still advertised on this forum
    Very nice wood
I bought a couple of yellow and red carribeen wood and blackwood
Some of the blackwood boards are very thick and ideal for draw front panels, etc...
It is at least 15-20cm thick
I don't want to cut it into small pieces so that my table saw can split it.
And since I don't have a band saw, I would like to know if anybody on this forum knows a place in Melbourne to slice these boards
if so, where and at what cost ?
If I remember correctly there is only a very thick board which is not long and wide
Roughly the size of a draw panel (probably 50cm long x 25 or 30cm wide and 15-17cm thick I think)
So for somebody with the tools it should be pretty quick

    6" to 8" THICK?

That is one thick board (or should that be billet?).

I would think that any decent timber yard should be able to resaw it for you for a price.

I would say it is probably more 5-6" thick
    It is a very small board (8" x 22")
Just the right size for a draw panel or something like that

Oh I see. It was probably intended as a turning blank.

Do you have any mates with a bandsaw?

They would be easily able to resaw it for you.

Failing that, try your local joinery shop

    I don't know anybody with a bandsaw

At 8" high - I would expect that the table saw could split it in 2 cuts. If the fence is set and the table/blade/fence are aligned the top and bottom cuts should line up perfectly. The only loss would be the table saw kerf vs bandsaw kerf.

*even if the cuts don't meet the small join could be quickly severed with a hand saw and the result lip (due to thin handsaw kerf) planed / sanded flat*

Taswon Timbers 3 Northern Rd West Heildelberg have a very good bandsaw. They can cut more than 300mm. I gave them some 300 x ~1300 about 3m long to rip up but they said it was too heavy and didn't have a straight edge, so I did it with a portable band saw. But they did rip over a kilometer of 150 x 30 diagonally for me to make weather boards.
