spalted maple help
recently I aquired a stump of spalted maple and it has ben siting in my shed for about a week there is mold or fungus starting to grow as it will be awhile before I can get it cut how should I care for it? How should I remove the mold? Will the mold cause damage if so is there a way to reverse it or at least slow it down?

jt - fungus will continue to grow as long as there is enough moisture to support it. The trick with spalted wood is to catch it at the stage where there are plenty of spalt lines, but before serious degradation of the wood occurs. The best way to arrest them is to get it down to less than about 15% MC as quickly as possible. Not easy with a large chunk of a stump. If you can break it down into even a few pieces, it will speed up the drying process.
Cheers,IW

Don't know about maple but it sounds like the spalting process is still ongoing in a big way so if you don't get it dry enough to stop the mould you might end up with nothing more than a pile of pith! I'd try moving it to somewhere warm and airy - - - - soon!
