    FAB,
Timber prices, like most other prices in our consumer economy are set by supply & demand. This is variously effected by proximity to source, over/under supply, strong/weak demand, whether you are a regular customer of the supplier, if you buy in large quantities, whether the species you want has been mostly tied up in World Heritage listing etc. etc. etc. It's a simple question in the same order as "how long is a piece of string?" Now I'm guessing that there aren't a lot of timber yards in Emerald and probably not a lot of trees to mill either. What you need to do if you want to control your timber costs is to work out your cutting lists and shop them around. If the quantities are large enough ( a few M3) then it may be worthwhile shopping further afield, otherwise you're probably stuck with what your local suppliers charge. As an example of the variations in price, I can buy Northern Silky Oak in Cairns (about 40 mins drive)for around $3K per M3, I can buy the same species in Tolga (50 mins drive in opposite direction) for about $2k per M3, if I hunt around and make enough phone calls I can probably find a mobile miller and buy it for $1.2K to $1.5K per M3 (that's if I buy a few M3 and organise a truck. I have no idea what NSO sells for in Emerald or Melbourne but I'm guessing it's more. Sorry I can't help you with a simpler, more definitive answer.

    Default Timber Prices

    I use a lot of re-cycled timber
If I buy DAR Jarrah,I'm paying $3750 per cubic meter
So, eg a piece of 210 x19 mm costs me $14.96 per metre
Places like Shivermetimber, Nullabor timbers in Melbourne are all about the same.
There are other sources eg demolition yards, but if you don't have the gear to dress the timber yourself, the above is a worthwhile option
