Making Timber sample ID Chart
being new to wood work I find frustrating ID timber yet I see sample charts of timbers in schools(very old) and thought that it would be good to have a wall chart or legit samples of timbers so that ID would be easier? does anyone know of a sample chart or have interest in complilig such a thing for forum distribution??
cheers
Bob

Wood ID Chart
Agreed, I'm looking for the same.
I found a list of wood types, complete with their suitability to various tasks (furniture, turning, musical inst, carving, boats, flooring); I'd just love some kind of chart that has an image on it too.

I brought this same topic up a few months ago and was keen to have a go at it but at the end of the day there is just too much to do to make it work. There are many sites online that do have the info required and the csiro has produced a book on the australian species. If I can find the Thread about it with the info to point you in the right direction I will post it here for you.

I found samples a much better way for identifying timbers. Start here Trend Timbers » Wood Sample Collection and build on it. Or put it together yourself.
My collection of 82 is small compared with others on this forum.

Wood Chart
I just got "The Complete Manual of Woodworking", Jackson/Day/Jennings from the local library.
It has an alphabetical listing of woods, with pics, characteristics, workability and common uses; all on the one listing.
