Timber verandah post questions
Ok, I'm in Queensland, gold coast in particular, and kwila/merbau is commonly used for new verandah and deck posts. I'm in the process of
building my verandah and want some nice timber posts that are going to last
Is Merbau/kwila the same timber?
Are they the best choice of timber for posts,if not what is?
Which is better to use, solid or laminated?
Cheers

Yes, they are one and the same. Need to be carefull of staining on masonry. One advantage with laminated is it stays straighter.

Kwila is only durability class 2 if you want them to last. For longevity you should use durability class one = ironbark, tallowwood, grey gum, gympie messmate to name a few. Laminated is definately straighter for long lengths but for less than three metres you shouldn;t have trouble getting straight stock. Regards Tim..
