Timber in WA
Where do people go to get their rough sawn timber in WA?
I thought it would be useful to start a thread where everyone can list their favourite suppliers and mills.
There are lots of timber mills and suppliers around but recommendations based on price and service are always worthwhile, especially as we might pass through suburbs and towns and not realise there are bargains to be found.
If the supplier or mill specialises in particular timbers or has something unusual or particularly cheap, that's worth a mention too.Graeme

Good idea
it IS a good idea - but let's not restrict it to WA... Let's go nationwide on this... How about Adelaide and the NE pasturelands? How about Mildura and northern Victoria...
Great idea...
Thanks

I don't see why not. Let's open it up.
I know that many of the forum members mill their own timber but sometimes we want timber that we don't have on hand and don't want the Bunnings DAR treatment.
In particular, this thread will be useful to city fellas like me who don't have any ideas about country mills or even timber suppliers on the opposite side of the city.
I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
Good suggestion Jedo.Graeme

I went to a small mill outside Collie a while back. I think it was called "Saunders" or something like that. They were easy to deal with and the quality was excellent. Their 100x25 was actually 115x30! By the way, they only supply green sawn Jarrah.

Timber in W.A.
Hi all,
Bookend - I don't know of many timber merchants in W.A. however while visiting there a couple of months ago we visited a business. They have a huge selection, prices seemed reasonable to me and they will ship anywhere in oz as well as overseas. Web Site is
www.djarilmari.com in Denmark W.A.
Cheers,
BruceCheers all !!

Great posts Mike and Bruce. These are exactly the types of things I had in mind.
Mike- I love jarrah. How did you find the prices compared to Perth? Did you save money?
Bruce- An interesting thing about the djarilmari link is that a yellow pages search doesn't even bring it up and the mill supplies some goldfields' timbers that aren't commonly stocked in the city.Graeme

Hiya bookend Graeme,
Whadda ya mean compare to Perth price!!! I couldn't find any green sawn for love or money that was worth talking about. Now down to price....
From memory it was about $700 a cube for merch (which was pretty good stuff) and about 12-1300 for select. They will also quarter saw on request. Oh and these were cash price. These prices were what I paid but my dad organised them so you'll have to see what they will do for you.
The mill is just out of Collie on the Mummbalup rd. I don't know the phone number.
I have got a couple of cube stripped, both merch and select and when it is dry (Dec) it will sure beat scouring the salvage yards. On the salvage yard bit, there was a mention of Vinsan on a post not long ago and I can recommend them as I am a regular there and have been for years. The only problem is the blackbutt is taken out for the floor remilling guy around the corner and the same guy picks over the whole yard as fresh stock is put in so you have to be quick to beat him to it.
Good luck and happy woodworking.
Mike.

Brilliant idea Greame!
One that I tend to wander over to is one on the coast road in Binningup just south of the binninup servo and turnoff as you head south watch for the last of the market gardens you will see the shed at the start of the bush on the left turn in the dirt road Johns the blokes name that runs it I stumbled onto it when I went there for an auction a few years back
There is another but Ive only been there once for some jarrah sleepers hes on the road to Worsley sorry cant remember the name
I tend now to head out the back roads or to the son in laws parents farm to get my own timber and take the covered trailer and chainsaw with me when I head out to Kal to visit the daughter and rarely buy timbers even from mills... ahem with one creviat... I LOVE AUCTIONS!! and have to do some serious SELF CONTROL when I go to them have credit card and am not afraid to use it... buggar it!
And I really do need to push myself up to Perth again to meet up with ScottyK and that bloke with the African Blackwood health probs have halted me just lately theres also that mob just south of Mandurah that have quite a bit of timber... what was their name? damn I hate that!! but I havent managed to get there either... frazzmonglegrufff it!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Bookend, nice idea mate , if u search the forums a bit u will find numerous threads answering similar questions, i have posted to several as have many others and its gets a bit repetative as the same suppliers are usually mentioned and the people asking have may not have looked in the yellow pages or searched the net.(which u have done, i do get a big list when searching whitepages, under business, WA, Timber)
http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/sear...rchInput.jhtml
The modertors 'may' be a bit testy about promoting functioning businesses in the forum but i think a good list with updates and descriptions of the kinds of woods available is a good idea, specially for the people who keep asking for the similar info.
One that is maintained by the sellers, that is the various sawmills and timber suppliers add their details to it, would be something that 'could' work for sellers, buyers and the forum.
I would definatley run it by the Ubeaut staff if its anything more permanent or intent than forum responses...
I bought 2 x 20kg boxes from Djalimari over the last couple of years. Excellent quality woods for sure. Well cured and some nice grains with the burls and mallee roots. The quality is excellent.
these look interesting

John- I'd say the Timber and Hardware Suppliers forum is more for the permanent links and advertising of individual suppliers. My idea was to try to get a current idea of what's out there that is very good, with the potential that the thread could be "bumped" from time to time as we try different mills or hear some timber supply tips or rumours.
I really like the white pages search tip of just plugging in "timber" into the business section. I didn't realise that it would bring up every business with timber anywhere in its name. I thought you had to know the whole name of the business to search the white pages. Great tip and thanks.Graeme
