Translucent Huon Pine?
How common is translucent Huon Pine - I have some it's awesome.
Is it resin or what is it - it appears to be about 15mm wide by about 40mm long and spans over several years of growth.
Does anyone have any ideas - pic to follow
Thanks

Light seems to go through any huon thinner than about 5mm if it is dipped in oil.

This is 10mm or more and the surrounding timber which is thinner doesn't let light through

Here's pic (I think)
The translucence is much wider, broader, deeper etc. than the picture shows.
It goes through about 20mm of the piece and contains loads of growth rings as you can see

That is really unusual. Other kinds of pine often have resin saturated streaks that let light through but I have never seen it in huon.

I've now found the matching pair (the other piece to it) - can these be made into a pen or it isn't hard enough - it certainly seems hard enough

you can make a pen out of just about anything can't you? don't know what finish would stick to it though apart from burnishing with oil or maybe shellawax.

Have never had translucent Huon but I have had a more dense timber Hairy Oak go that way.
I can not open your pics.

Check out "translucent Norfolk island pine bowl" in Google as it will give you an insight as to what and why it happens. The work of wood turners such as Ron Kent & Kelly Dunn focus on the translucent properties of the wood.
