Thread: How do I treat African Mahogongy

I have 10 slabs (originally 14) approx 3.5 mtrs long, 45 mm thick and ranging from 1.3 mtrs wide downwards

The tree was cut down 14 years ago and the trunk was placed on concrete blocks for approx 2 years with ends sealed with wax.

It was then transported to a mill that did a terrible job of cutting the slabs (Lots of chatter on surface)

Since that time it has been stored in my garage with spacers between between and steel banded. It is absolutely bone dry.

6 years ago I took (the missing) 4 slabs and over a 12 month period saturated (and I mean til it was seeping through the other side) in firstly linseed oil diluted with approx 30% turps.slowly reducing the turps to zero and over the last 2 saturation procedures added recommended doses of Terrabine.

These were then placed on top of of a snaking patio wall exposed to both sunlight and rainfall. Each year they have been well re-oiled.

Despite this 2 of the slabs have rotted along the weather facing edge.

I am now (aged 70) wanting to craft the remaining slabs into something else (Furniture - bookcases and the like) but wold also like to resurrect the patio feature.

Any ideas ? ?

I would mention that I am an old school Shipwright and have most tools required to shape.
