Default what to look for in second-hand WC

    Hi,

    New to the forum.

    I am interested in a second-hand mk3 workcentre.

What should I look for when going to see the goods? That is, what sort of problems should I watch out for in a second-hand workcentre?

Also, what would be the essential gear to purchase (or look for in an ad)?
    height winder?
    anything else?

    thanks,

    adrian

Probably the key is the condition of the table - most of the cuts involve the wood sliding along the table, so it should have no rust, or huge dents or gouges, and should be flat.

You could ask to see it converted from tablesaw mode to crosscut mode. This would show if the owner knows how to use the wc, and if it has been banged out of alignment, the conversion won't take just a few seconds, but will need some jiggling and 'persuasion'.

It may be worth taking a look at the Triton site, and seeing if you can get a list of all the parts and accessories that *should* come with it. If there are some missing, you may have a bargaining point.

As for essential equipment - depends somewhat on what you plan to use it for. I think everyone should have a Triton SuperJaws!

    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Cool

Why a mk3? Why not a Triton 2000 Workcentre? This model has been on the market long enough now that it shouldn't be too hard to find. As for component compatibility, have a look at the Triton Woodworkers Club site www.tritonwoodworkers.org.au

There is a compatibility chart there that will assist you in determining which upgrade works with which model.

    Default 2nd hand WC

The heading had me worried. I was contemplating advising that you check for stains and deposits.
Silly me. WC as in Triton and not as in dunny.

    Why a Mk3? mainly cost...
I have seen some 2000's in the trading post but they are always just outside of my budget...

    Thanks, Andrew, for your input.
Your suggestion to check how easily the workcentre swaps to crosscut mode is a good one.

Re: SuperJaws. i have seen at leats one other post of your singing the virtues of the Super Jaws. I will keep them in mind.

    Adrianb.

I still have a MK3 and it should come with a sawguard, fence, protractor and crosscut stops.

You can upgrade it with a heightwinder, dust collection bag, planer attachment, bevel cutting guide and sliding extension table.

There was a MK3 fixed extension table ( now superseded)- if it is offered , take it. It makes a great outfeed table.

    Good luck.
