Default Any other router allows above table bit changing?

    Hi there,

I was wondering if there is any other router (apart from the Triton router) which allows to change the bits without having to remove the router from the RTA300?
I have this cheap router now, good enough for the handwork, but apparantly not good enough for the table.
Since the Triton is about $400,- I was wondering if there is no alternative?

If no other router allows for above table bit changing, is there any which has a faster way of changing?

    thanks,
    Wooded

i have a makita in my wc and i found that you can raise it or is that lower it fully, remove the plastic ring and the spanner fits inside to unlock the nut, so you can remove the bit with out taking the router from the wc. BUT, if you are going to spend money on a new router then i would suggest you pay a little extra and get a triton, its worth having it with all the extra you get with it.

i used to have my old makita router mounted in the rta300 before i got tyhe triton. i could change bits under the table with 2 collet spanners. it wasnt bad, but you cant beat the triton in the triton table in my opinion

I believe that there is a new Porter Cable router that is adjustable from the top of a router table.

I have a 1/2 inch GMC router in my router table with the Xtreme Xtension fitted, it is great, makes the changing of bits very quick and easy. No more fiddling with spanners, quarter of a turn with the allen key each way and you are done. Well worth the expense

If your GMC router is the R1200m, you double the price of it by just adding that Xtreme Xtension ...

It might be worth the money though, I will see how annoying it will be when I use my router more often. Do I really change bits so often, or not?
Only one way to find out, time will tell.

    Thanks.

The Triton router has more features than just being able to change the bit above the table so these need factoring into the price as well.

When I make picture frames I might use three or four bits to get the moulding I require, so easy bit change is a must.

Growing old is much better than the alternative!

Just think about the design of the table. Hinge the top so you can lift it, lock it, then access the router easily. Then use whatever router you want.

I wasn't aware of there being a new table. The current one is only a few years old.... Surely they wouldn't superceed it already.

I have a (should that be an?)Hitachi m12v in my homemade router table, and currently use the spindle lock & spanner under the table.

I have thought using some sort of "tube spanner" from above the table, similar to what you use for removing taps to replace washers.

Maybe fashioned from a bit of flattened pipe, as the collet on the Hitachi is round with a couple of flats for the spanner. Would obviously have to be a good fit so as not to damage the collet.

    Hmmm. More food for thought.
