I'd fully expect it to get hit with customs duties - but if I remember correctly that's basically just the GST anyway?
Really cheap + 10% = still really cheap
I'm sure Lee Valley would not want to get themselves into trouble marking something as a gift when it's not.The Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

Duty is not GST.
Documentation supplied with the goods must state the country of origin (which in the case of Bessey would be Germany I believe) and based on that and the type of product there may be an Import Duty applied.
I my case, purchase of some electronic components from the US where the country of origin was Japan, there was a small Duty applied (think it was 8%)
There was a documentation fee which was $70 from memory.
Then finally GST was added.

Mike

Lemme know the outcome. Maybe a "B" package.
I can have trouble receiving goods. I have no dispatch contacts or facilities. I'm too busy to do it. So maybe I'm not the best person to handle a large order. Sounds like Darryl is in the box seat if he's happy?Boring signature time again!

I think a few of us must have emailed Rob Lee
It's easy for me to handle it here - my company has a fairly large warehouse, forklifts etc. I'd have it shipped there and pack & despatch to Victoria etc. No big deal for something like this.
I'll most likely take one of each set - so that's at least 6-8 sets so far, plus whatever other bits we want to tack on the order I guess. The Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

So maybe ship a single order into Sydney then out of that a shipment down to Rev to distribute for our Mexican cousins?
Cheers

Duty is still applicable, and GST has replaced the 'wholesale sales tax'. Duty is IIRC 5% of cost of goods, plus GST of 10%, plus 10% gst payable on shipping cost. There was thread a year or so ago on the Customs 'threshhold' wiich was in the vicinity of $500AU. But they can hit you with duty & GST at any level if they feel like it, and they also add multiple parcels together to establish the 'threshhold' amount when they come from the same supplier & ship near the same date - you have to prove otherwise.

The Bessey K-Body clamps cost in the vicinity of $110 to $125 each here - when you can get them. Never even seen the clamp blocks here and they look very useful.
They're going to cost, assuming we get hit with customs etc, in the vicinity of $50 each clamp, plus freight, with the blocks free. Assuming we can get the freight cost down to a reasonable level it could work out well. Even with standard surface mail (assuming we can all wait that long , the cost would be around $70 each landed. If we paid the regular air freight cost we'd be only slightly better off than buying local.
So far we have:
Me : 1 x A, 1 x B
Numbat : 1 x B
Outback : maybe 1 x B
Groggy : 1 x A, 1 x B
doublejay : 1 x B
gold leader : 1 x B
rev : 1 x B
bsrlee : 2 x B
Wongo : ??
Justin : ??
So that's at least 10-11 sets. Anyone else?
I figure on this taking at least a week plus to organise - but we'll need to get the order in before the 29th of course.
Of course it's probably smart to add in the other bits & pieces anyone wants at the same time - save on freight costs.
I figure we calculate the cost of the shipment in from Lee Valley + duties etc + one drop shipment to a central place in Vic (and one in QLD if we have a few ppl up there as well) and everyone pays a relative proportion of those on-costs according to the value of their part of the order. If anyone can't pick up from one of the drop ship points they pay any extra local freight.
That sound fair enough? The Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

Hi -
Just a quick update.... quote is still not here yet, and I'm told it still may take another 12 hours or so....
We're getting quotes done to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth - for skid weights of 950 and 1950 pounds... (30-75 sets)
Not that 30 is a minimum or anything, but just so as we can see what the difference is....
Cheers -

Hi -
OK - here it is (same information sent to the "ringleaders" by email) - freight itself is very reasonable...what I don't know are terminal fees, duties, taxes etc once the ship docks...you'll have to find that out down there...
The quotes I have are:
Quote # 1 US $ Qty Total order
17F0600 $109.00 10 $1,090.00
17F0601 $119.00 20 $2,380.00
$3,470.00
Weight 925 lb
Size 1.2 CBM
# of Pallets 1
Frt Cost, approx cost, US $ $305 Sydney, Melbourne or Perth Terminal
Frt Cost, approx cost, US $ $325 Brisbane terminal
Quote # 2 US $ Qty Total order
17F0600 $109.00 25 $2,725.00
17F0601 $119.00 50 $5,950.00
$8,675.00
Weight 1920
Size 2.38 CBM
# of Pallets 1
Frt Cost, approx cost $520 Sydney, Melbourne or Perth Terminal
Frt Cost, approx cost $560 Brisbane terminal
Sorry for the ugly formatting - can't seem to make it work out...
The short of it is - looks like for ocean freight, the costs of shipping at this end are reasonable - actually, even less than domestic inland shipping (each box is 30-40 pounds!). Quote 1 uses 30 sets, but you can figure that they'll accept 10 sets at the same rate...
Quote 2 - is really a big order - and a significant chunk of change for someone to manage - but is there to show that there is a slight economy of scale to a much larger quantity...
I think the "sweet spot" is at the 30 quantity though.... y'all may have to strongarm some more people into participating (or wait for Derek to get back... )....
Wish we do more to help out - but we've no room at all margin-wise here...
Cheers -

Bessey just can't make them any faster than that...we've already gone through more clamps in the last 18 days than we have in the previous 5 years...
Now we know what it's like to be the dog that catches the car....

I'm liking the idea of 2x B packs
Gees Rob wouldn't it just be easier to open a franchised store and distribution centre in Melbourne, near the Western ring road for distribution ease, only big woodwork store on the west side.
Actually as luck would have it, it would be close to me !!! so I'd be happy to help out
