More Chisels to ID please?
OK we are getting towards the end of the chisel collection and I am becoming familiar with quite a few makers and their product.
I have a few that I need a hand with, images to follow.
One is a Marples, but the blade configuration is different to any of my others.
Not sure if it is from a home modification, or by design, perhaps someone out there can tell me? It will be in image 1, 2 and 3.
Then we have what I suspect are 3 Bergs in the next 6 images.
One red handle, in pretty rough condition, one clearly marked on blade + blue on handle.
Smallest one has Berg styling, and marked Eskilstunasteel, can it be confirmed Berg?
Once again all feedback welcome.
Once I have ID'd all these I'll post up my full range including Signal, Witherby,Ward, FG Pearson, Titan, Nooitgedagt, ESTEEL and Charles Taylor.
Most, if not all these, will be up for sale in the near future, most likely on eBay as I have no idea of their values to name a price.
Look forward to your responses.

Hi Rod,
I thought that the experts on the forum would have answered. I haven't seen how many times you've asked the questions, perhaps information fatigue or asking for information to improve a sale price might be stopping them?
Eskilstuna in Sweden is an old industrial town, much like Sheffield in England.
What you have there is a generic Swedish Chisel, made in any one of a number of factories, just like buying a tool marked Sydney, Australia, or as a better analogy, "Sheffield." While it's styled after a Berg chisel, you can't say that it came from the EA Berg factory.
The Marples firmer chisel has a home modification. Worthless.
Cheers,
eddie
edit: ESTEEL = eskilstuna steel as well.

Yeah, your Marples has been hacked to make a short bevel edge.
And yes, pic 4 shows 2 Bergs at the bottom. And what Eddie said; there's another brand I've seen from that town I think, starts with Jern... (brain fade).
ADDED: I wouldn't say the Marples is worthless. Will do for a thumper. Some of their old steel was damn hard.Cheers, Ern

Jernbogalet - jernbagolet? similar, as well as the brand with a beaver logo whose name escapes me and might come back later - - - "Beaver" brand
ADDED: I wouldn't say the Marples is worthless. Will do for a thumper. .

Hi Guys, your replies and information is very welcome.Trying to enter the world of chisels (and tools in general) is pretty intimidating with all the terminology and brands to come to grips with, but your feedback is certainly helping this amatuer.

Jernbolaget?
http://www.holzwerken.de/museum/hers...nbolaget.phtml
Jernbolaget is not really a name but Swedish for "Iron/Steel Company"
Wolfgang
PS: Can't help with the beaver.

Hi Rod
No, it's not a berg. Eskilstunasteel is a different company that was located in Torshälla, which is a smaller town outside Eskilstuna.
I did some research on it a while back (and again today) with very little info as the result. For some reason hardly anyone in sweden writes about their old tool companies. Or maybe I just can't find it.
Anyway, I ended up in the eskilstuna city archives, where they apparently have some papers under the title "ESKILSTUNASTEELS VERKSTADSKLUBB I TORSHÄLLA". Verkstadsklubb means trade union. The papers date from 1944 where it was founded to 1960 where it ended. I haven't read the documents as they are not available online, so I dont know what they will contain. What happened before and after is so far a mystery.
I don't know how good they are. I have one myself but haven't work with it yet, but it looks to be well made.

Virtually anything with Eskilstuna stamped on it will be fine steel.
There is a serious collecting virus going around for Bergs (and these are indeed fine chisels) which pushes the price of Bergs out of reach of most. On the other hand Jernbolaget have made some outstanding steel as well, and this is found in their chisels and also plane blades etc. If you find any Jernbolaget tools anywhere, they are usually underpriced for what they are, and you should snap them up. You won't be disappointed.
I have also found that the Swedish Toledos are very good and the Dutch Sandvik made with Swedish steel are also outstanding.
I have one large Kronan bevelled edge chisel which is also wonderful. These must be from a low volume manufacturer. I have only ever seen two.
Cheers
SG
PS I also agree with Ern on the old Marples steel. Excellent!.... some old things are lovely

Geez it's great to get replies from all over the world! There is a serious amount of combined knowledge floating around this forum.
Until I started this toolbox sorting journey, I thought a chisel is a chisel!
Now I know better it seems tools have a whole world of their own to explore.
Even as a non-wood-worker I've enjoyed the process thanks to all the help I've got.
Chisels are now complete (see show off your chisels thread)...might do the planes next
