great to see this comp up and running again, and a couple of brain teasers
Now....
Is it the surface gauge? because it is the only one that has an adjustment (by set screws) "against" the surface it registers on?
Regards,
Peter

The combination square because the clamping mechanism in all the other tools is roughly the same -- the moveable bit is pushed against the tool body
with the combo square, the rule is PULLED into the tool body
or, still on the combo square -- it's the only tool where the measurement bit (the rule) is reversibleregards from Alberta, Canada

No, not what I was thinking.
But I am amazed at all the options that you guys are coming up with.
I think I had better give the answer tomorrow. Those were the droids I was looking for.

The surface gauge because it is the only one that adjusts in more than 2 planes/ways off the one screw?

What about the scriber in the combination square?

I think it is the Incra hight gauge as it is the only item that is not used for making or making a line with, I think.

I think I have let this drag out far enough. I'm going to pass it over to 'woodie one' because he got the right answer but wrong tool. I think knowledge of how the tools work was necessary in this case and not everyone is aware of how the Incra works (well, I know that now ) Loads of great answers though.
The Answer is: The Incra gauge because all the tools are infinitely adjustable with the exception of the Incra Gauge. It can only be adjusted in very precise 1/32" incraments. It has a set of interlocking racks, with teeth spaced at 1/32" that limit the movement.
Actually correct answer but wrong tool.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Hi Woodie One,
I'll have first stab.
Is it the 53, being the only pictured tool with no depth adjustment ?

Two obvious differences,
1) the HNT Gordon isn't a Stanley design.
2) the spokeshave with adjustable mouth (is it a 53?) doesn't have screw adjustment of the blade.

Congratulations Thumbthumper and Stuffy - both right and in what appears to be record time!
I think I made it too easy
The Stanley 53 Spokeshave is the only one that does not have a screw adjustment for the depth of the blade.
Over to you Thumbthumper - you hit it right first!

the #151 (?) because it's got two adjustment screws, the others only have one
teh #4 because it's got plastic (resin?) handles, all the others have wood or metalregards from Alberta, Canada
