The circular gauge (Veritas?) is held in place by a collet - differently to all the others which use a thumb screw?

All but the big square plastic thing can be adjusted by hand (thumb) where it needs a tool?

Both the Veritas and Incra gauges have a thumb screw. So no to both.
I think i had better spill the beans soon.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    The marking gauge, because
    1) the design is so old it pre-dates patent law, so doesn't have a patent

    2) all the tools can be used for wood working, but the marking gauge is the only one made of wood

    3) the marking gauge is the only one that could readily be made by a wood worker (replace the adjusting screw with a wedge), all the others require metal working skills (even the plastic gauge needs a metal injection mold)

is it the bevels because they pivot on an axis only but all the others have a main stem they slide up and down on?

The surface gauge because it can be adjusted at multiple points, where the others are adjusted at just one point.

    , and
None of those are what i was thinking.

I really liked this answer even though it's wrong.

You've got us all on this one NC!!

Is it the combination square because when it is set it can provide three measurements at one setting - length, 45 degrees, 90 degrees? All the others can provide only one measurement (length or angle) when they are set.

The surface gauge can be adjusted in 3 (4?) axes, the others can only be adjusted in 1 or 2
Also, the Veritas is the only one in danger of rolling off the bench

woodie, the bevels can kinda provide 2 measurements at once (tip of blade to stock as well as angle)

The pointy stick on the base thing is the only one you can draw a circle or make rounded lines with, all the other tools make straight lines.

Pretty basic, but.... the surface gauge because it stands up, the rest lie down

It is wrong, but I will ensure that Andreas gets the same prize as the winner

elanjacobs, woodie and renov8or are also wrong but the Veritas has actually rolled off the bench before. I stick it in a dog hole now to stop it from rolling off again.

Do I need to put you all out of your misery or are you happy to keep guessing?

The square is the only one that has a spirit level and thus can get things plumb and level
