    Nice saw
    Looks quite clean.
I'm not up on pricing but $150 seems high.
I just paid $40 the other day for this

    Cheers Matt

    Matt

I think that is a No.9 with the "improved handle." It always seems a little bit "Star Trek" to my obscure mind. $40 is an exceptionally good buy.

Not sure a double nib necessarily indicates a 77, Fergiz - the 77s illustrated on Backsaw.Net have pretty ordinary handles, with no double nibs. What would really settle the matter would be if the plate is taper-ground, but the only way to find out would be to have the current owner caliper it. It's a nice little saw, but even if it is a 77, there's no way I would cough up $150 for it with the blade in the condition it's in, it looks pretty pitted to me, Matt's #9 looks a better bet, I reckon his blade will clean up a lot more.....

Paul, I rather like the blade shape on the 9, but not the handle. One of my favourite users has an extended 'nose', but a single curve rather than the cyma recta curve of the 9: No-set.jpg

For the first #9 copy I made, I put the thumb indentation in the handle as well, to make it 'authentic', but ended up replacing it with a bog standard handle because I found the indentation wasn't really in the best position for my thumb. Either I got it wrong (was just working from a picture), or my thumb is in the wrong place.

The projecting nose is actually quite useful on occasion, because you can use about half the blade & make cuts deeper than the blade (with the saw at an angle, of course) without the spine getting in the way.

    Cheers,
    IW

I have a metacarpal bone saw which is just the job for thumb re-alignment.

Hmm, thanks for your kind offer, Paul, but I think realignment of the handle was a simpler (& far safer!) option......

Matt - doesn't matter which hand, I'm keeping both firmly in my pocket whenever Paul is around, & particularly if I spot him carrying that bone saw!

    Cheers,

    Paul

It's a nice saw. Full depth on a 28" saw was about 7 3/4" so it hasn't lost much steel through sharpening and the handle looks complete and undamaged. The medallion dates it around 1888 - 1896. I think a collector might be interested in such a good clean example providing he didn't mind the name etched on the back of the saw plate. Henry signed all his D8s (not personally though) so no uniqueness there .

Possibly move the decimal place one to the left and you would have a sale but only if it was sharpened by one of the specialists. As it is, move the decimal one to the left and divide by two.

However I have been wrong before .

On the other hand ... there's some interesting stuff here ... and ...

edit. I was thinking something looked a bit "eagly" there (closely related to "pantherish") ... but I was way off, in my head, until I searched up the real thing.

So I get to reevaluate this price as also pretty nuts.

    Cheers,
    Paul

There is something wrong with we're I buy my saws from.
I think it's got to do with the placement of the decimal point.
    But not sure[emoji854][emoji854].

    Cheers Matt

If my wife saw this she would be all over my saw collection hoping to hit a jackpot.
    But I don't think so!!
