    Default Genuine Bailey Plane

Found a Bailey No4 smoothing plane going very cheep, an actual bailey, not stanley. Is it worth buying this plane, are the genuine bailey ones rare, or very good quality? I already have a No4 plane, and don't really want to be buying another if it's nothing special.

    Cheers

    Matt,

I very much doubt there is a non-Stanley Bailey plane going cheap on EBay unless it is a forgery. From what I recall, the planes made by Bailey after he parted company with Stanley weren't called 'Bailey' and I'm pretty sure that it was Stanley who first used that name on their planes in tribute to him. To the best of my knowledge, if it is marked 'Bailey' then it is a Stanley.

You are right, after a few probing questions, turns out that it was a stanley, but a 41/2 rather than a 4, so bidded on it anyway and won.
