Default Hand Saws; Spear & Jackson Replacement Screw

Hello, I have recently gotten hold of a Spear & Jackson, what appears to be a small dovetail sawthough unfortunately it is missing a screw that holds the handle.

I plan on doing it up along with a Diston Tenon Saw and smaller tenon saw I Have.

    Picture of the S&P;

My question is, does anyone have any screw assembly for the Spear & Jackson handle or know where I can get one?

The assembly is screw with an internal threading and a screw which is then screwed into the threaded part of the other screw, sorry, hard to explain.

    Thanks,
    Harlan.

    Hi Harlan,

There are a few options, if functionality is what you are after, you can buy some from

    http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(du...aspx?SKU=20066

Or, you can make your own, I do that with split nuts, but not with the "improved screws"

Or, you can trawl ebay, they often come up as a bundle of saw screws....

Or, you can pick up a saw that isn't worth restoring just to get the screws.

Or, you can buy from Tools For Working With Wood

I'd like to see some pictures of the restoration progress.

    Regards
    Ray

What I was thinking of doing, is if I cannot find a saw that is useless on the weekend is maybe making my own at school on the metal lathe Probably out of brass or aluminum. Just tap the bolt out and make a screw for it. Will have a talk to the teacher and see if I can, I'm currently working on a candle holder, but can get that finished within 2 weeks and start this.

I will certainly do a thread on the hand saw restoration, though it will be on the Diston after I have finished restoring the Hand plane (Stanley #5). And then the Spear and Jackson.

What would you recommend for the clean-up process of a heavily rusted blade? Electrolysis or a quick go at it with the 400 grit sand paper?

    Thanks, Harlan
