I'm in love...
...with my cabinet scraper!
I've had it sitting on the shelf for years, and not really used it much. I recently got back into some woodwork, and I've been building a box for my coloured pencils, with some 3mm thick surfaces for the base and lid. I power-sanded some of it, but it's so hard to get a nice level finish with a consistent thickness, and it's always full of little dips and bumps. I also had a few small pieces for dividers, etc. I planed some of the edges, and was quite proud that they didn't need sanding, but other parts had some roughness from the thicknesser - to much to sand, and parts were too small to get the plane into it, or to even clamp in place. Eventually I pulled out the scraper to give it a go, and wow!
It easily scraped off the roughness, and gave a really nice finish very quickly, without running through 10 grades of paper and wearing my arms out in the process. The flat edge of the scraper also made it really easy to get nice square cut corners without the slight rounding that the cork sanding block always gives me.
And no dust, no noise.
Such a pleasure to use, and such a nice tool.Good things come to those who wait, and sail right past those who don't reach out and grab them.

And it doesn't have a chipbreaker.
Very underrated tool, glad you love it.

Frank.

They are one of my favourite tools also, I've even got a scraper plane.
SBPower corrupts, absolute power means we can run a hell of alot of power tools

Aah yes, a scraper plane. Don't get me wanting more tools... Happy with my hand scraper for now.
I love to drool over the plane collections at the wood show. I'm enjoying the few planes that I do have. A good quality, sharp, well setup plane is an absolute joy to use.
@FRB, in pointing out the lack of chip breaker, are you pointing out that it can't get clogged?Good things come to those who wait, and sail right past those who don't reach out and grab them.

Sorry, was made in jest pertaining to a thread that is currently running regarding chipbreakers. And in reflection your love for a card scraper will grow when it comes to interlocking grain, don't forget to use the vertical edge as a straight edge to check the flatness of the work.

OK, now I understand.

Actually, Frank, you could argue that it does. The burr provides a nice curved surface much closer to the cutting edge than any cap-ironedplane blade. And if you don't burr your scrapers, you have an even steeper incline at the cutting edge.
Just semantics......
Cheers,IW
