Thats what I use. At a glance I know up from down, left from right and inside from outside.

Joiners' Marks
Cool... i think these marks may have been developed by semi literate pre-industrial tradesmen and used in production scenarios where the person doing the marking up wasn't necessarily the person doing the cutting. There is a lot of detail that if I were doing it myself I'd find it faster and less confusing to write 'bottom', 'top', 'R style', 'L style', etc.
They're pretty glyphs though.
