Any Lefties want to split the discount on a pair of LV Skew Rebate Planes?
Serious question:
I am thinking of getting one of Rob Lee's new Skew Rebate Planes but I am right handed and probably won't use the other one.
If there is a southpaw out there who wants to split a pair buy, we will both save money.
Let me know and I'll organise it.

I like it both ways (my Dad was a southpaw and I guess I copied how he did things, so I have always been able to saw, plane and chisel with both hands).
It is tempting, but I think I wil have to let that one go thru to the keeper SGCheers

SG
if they are anything like the LN#140s and the edge trimming planes, they wont be handed in the sense you're talking about
left hand equates to planing with the grain going to the left
right hand equates to planing with the grain going to the right
for example I find that the #95s work as a pair -- If I'm not pushing one, I'm pulling the other along an edge.

Thanks Ian,
Just to clarify,
In this picture I would regard the plane labelled A as the right handed and that labelled B as the left handed.
Are we all singing from the same songbook?
Or am I back to front?

Hi there SG,
Your a bad man SG, flaunting your new purchase, (proposed) in front of us all. Onya.
Well, I aint no or-fority or nuffin on planes but,... My understanding of the Left and Right designation for planes, (based on the others about) is:
If you are planing from Right to Left, because the grain is Rising up from Right to Left the plane is designated a Right Hand plane. If the grain is Rising from Left up to the Right, as you face the workpiece, then you need to plane from Left to Right for best results. So a fenced plane, one designed for a fence on only one side, has to have a mirror version to allow the Left to Right planing. Hence you get the Left Hand plane.
And yes, unless you reposition the workpiece, to use the Left Hand version you would generally need to push it with your Left Hand.
Just my thoughts on the Right / Left philosophy. I may well be wrong, so please no beating me up, OK .
Others Darkside Masters might be able to enlighten us more accurately.
They are beautiful planes, Rob has done a great job on these by the look.
Cheers
Pops

I'm not much good with the left and right stuff either
but in the picture, the R/H plane is working from right to left which is OK if the grain is rising from right to left, i.e. the lane is knocking the grain over
however, if the grain were rising from left to right the A plane would be trying to dig it up so you would need the B (left hand) plane. Then by planing left to right you would be knocking the grain over.
which is what Pops said, I think
bottom line you need both or a #78 (I think te Record equivalent is #778)

Thanks Fellas.
I'm sure that you are both right.
I suppose we are all thinking the same thing - it is just my naming of the planes that has caused the problems.
So, ........ Who wants a leftie, ...or perhaps a rightie ..... depending on where you are standing?

You'll need both, only getting one will mean you'll be planing against the grain in some cases

I suppose by now there must be some proud owners of these lovely planes out there.
I am guessing that Derek will be giving us one of his excellent reviews in due course, I hope that I haven't missed it - his reviews are always worth reading.
In the meantime here is a brief introduction from another forum by an English gentleman called Paul Chapman.

The results look very impressive indeed.
