Magnetic bit holder for a brace
What I am looking for is a a magnetic bit holder like this:
Attachment 179271
with a pyramid shank that fits in the standard two-jaw chuck of a brace. That way I could use the hex bits that you can get for screwdriving etc in a brace.
Anyone ever seen one or know where I could buy one? If not, I may have to cannibalise a stuffed bit and weld it onto the end of the shank of a standard bit holder. I hope that won't stuff up the magnetism in the holder!Cheers

You can almost guarantee destroying the magnetism if you weld with the magnet attached. Do the welding and then epoxy the magnet in - this should give you what you want.

Or get one of the ones that fits onto a square ratchet shank, then butcher a ratchet adapter fitting...
I haven't had a brace for ages so can't see how it fits, but if you could fit a small hand tightening chuck onto the brace then, well

Or you could grind the shank of the bitholder pictured to make it fit your brace

I just use the long shank bits in mine and they fit the 2 jaw chuck ok. If the end is hard up in the top end of the chuck then all the jaws do is hold the shaft. It will turn screws the battery drill will not look at and has not slipped yet.
I was not aware of the Lee Valley bit holders so may have a look for them.
Regards
John

Hi Jeremy
I cannot recommend magnetic holders. Inevitably the bits fall out the open end.
Better are the P&N types. I recall buying these at Bunnings ..
Bits now clip in and remain secure.
I used this holder for braces and drivers I have built, as well as the Yankee braces I use ..
