    Default Mathieson chisels

I picked up a couple of very nice old chisels on the weekend: a Titan paring chisel and a Mathieson Mortice chisel. Both have heaps of steel left and look to be great additions to my collection of Berg & Titan chisels (all regular users).

I knew that Mathieson had a great reputation as a plane maker but wasn't aware they also made chisels. Do any of you have any experience with, or views on Mathieson chisels?

    Hi Harry,
I haven't come across Mathieson Mortice chisels before, but I do have a couple of very fine bevelled edge paring chisels that I value highly.
They take and hold a good edge, and are very light in the hand.
I'll get some pix next time I'm down at the shed if I remember.
Mathieson plane blades are very good as well, so I would guess that you got a good one.

I only have two Mathieson chisels, and they are finely made bevelled edge parers. They have such a fine bevel that they are useful as dovetail chisels. They hold an edge well, and are light in the hand.
As you can see, the larger one had done a lot of work before I got it.
I think that Mathieson were a high quality brand for their day, and still hold their own today.
As promised, here is a picture of these two.
