Hmm I wish my A2 was worth that much I would consider selling it but the last I saw it was only worth about 600 and I wouldn't part with it for that.

    • Stanley NUMBER 1 $2600

I'm happy to pick these up for you Scribbly Gum. No need to advance me any of the cash. I trust you!

    Many thanks Graham,
I'll have to pass on single planes - I am hoping to locate some matched pairs.

That bench is still there is it? Lovely piece of kit but I reckon they buggered it with the coat of estapol is seems to have on it. The shoulder vice looked a bit on the dodgy side too. Mind you for someone with too much cash it would make a great kitchen bench or something to throw your keys on in the hallway.

Great collection at that shop. A great purve. Can't go there with young kids. i spent a very little time actually looking at big boy's toys and most of my time kid wrangling. Must get back when they're older.

    Cheers,

    Hi Virgil,
Actually quite a lot of their treasures were devalued by a coat of gloss Estapol! I imagine that kid wrangling in there would be a full time, high stress occupation!

I thought you might have been messaging me to pick up the A1 for you to give you the complete range of A1 to A6 or maybe to add to your other A1 hidden in the shed? BTW, did I mention that it comes with a box.....?

Now that's an idea. A few scorch marks and a story of how it was saved from the fire in his workshop and I'd be set up for life besides clearing a lot of old junk from the shed.

    This is my favourite thread.

I love scrounging the markets and garage sales for bargains, unfortunately I never have much money to spend, so I don't get to buy things I would really like. I still enjoy the bartering process though, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

Here's an example: "How much for that plane?"(an old No 7 low knob) "I want $120 for it, it's over a hundred years old" "That's a lot, it doesn't look that old...(pause for effect while I pretend to look it over and scratch my head)..I thought the old ones had patent dates cast in the body?" say's I just testing him out, "No the patent dates didn't start until 1902, this was made in the late 1890's,..low knob, no raised ring, small adjusting screw, original blade, etc... correct in every way so I won't take less than $120" Oh well I tried, If I had the money it was worth buying for that. Damn you Patrick Leach!!!
It wasn't a total waste of time, he did let me have a 1/8 and 1/4 titan registered firmer chisels in very good condition for $5 each.

    Keep the stories coming,

    Steve.

Gee, you did well with those Titans.

Must try your technique next time. Thanks for the tips!

You did well with those Titans Steve.
Thanks to everyone who offered to pick up the Norris planes for me especially my old friend Graham.
Wouldn't it be nice to have even one Norris!
I have a block plane with a Norris adjuster - does that count?
My show and tell item this week looks pretty sad doesn't it.
You would step over it if you saw it in the street.
But wait, this ugly duckling has potential.
Beneath all that rust and neglect is a classy piece of ironmongery.
This blade is near to full and is 2-1/8 inches wide.
It came out of a beat up old jointer that I won on an overseas auction. The plane body was too expensive to ship so I settled for the blade only.
It has had a piece of sticky-tape applied over the bevel at some point and this has largely preserved it.
The all important back doesn't look too bad either. I'll have to wait and see how deep any pitting might be.
Now I don't think that this is a laminated blade, but the boys and girls down at the Berg steelworks knew how to turn out good blades, so this shouldn't be an issue.
I will clean this up and put it aside for a woodie project that I have in mind - probably a fore-plane.
    So here are the pix:

Thanks Ern, I usually have more success when I play dumb. Most of the time it's not acting.

Another example: "How much for this old chisel?" (a 3/8 Berg) "I want $8 for that , it's a good quality old English chisel" "Are you sure?...(pause..scratch head metaphorically, have another look...) it's got a name on it but I can't quite make it out can you see it?". Bit of a risk, but worth a try. "Looks like Berg, Eskil.. something. Must be foreign, you can have it for $2"

    WIN!!

Picked up a berg chisel a couple of weeks ago. With a saw I took it to the bloke at the counter. "where'd ya find that one?" Over in that tool box. "Ah". He looks at it carefully, takes it outside into the sunlight to have a good look at it. He brings it back in. "That's a good one that one. $15?" For a 1 1/2"Berg chisel $15 is fine.

Paid too much for the saw though. Once again I crossed my $30 barrier. It was a Beardshaw brass backed open handled carcase(?) saw. A bit beat up, lots of pitting and (after paying, dunno what I was thinking) I found that one of the split nuts was snapped through the middle, so the blade swings back and forth. The dealer was having a 25% off sale so I still got it and the chisel for less than $65. Nice looking saw though. Itll be at the next TTTG saw sharpening workshop.

    Cheerio,
    Virg.

From time to time I have a look at what Stuart Minuskin has listed on his website.
    Old Tools Stanley Tools

I am constantly amazed at the volume of his listings.
I noticed recently that he listed not one, but six Norris A5 smoothing planes in one hit.
Now I won't be buying but it staggers my feeble imagination that someone can have access to that many.
I wonder how many Norris planes were built in their day.
Now I have read that Stanley were producing 30,000 planes per week at their height, but Norris can't have been anywhere near this.
    Hmmm.................

So where does he get all his stock from??? Do people contact him directly with stuff for sale? does he advertise? does he scour the markets, garage sales and auctions like the rest of us??
