Mystery tool
Can anyone tell me what this tool is. Its obviously some type of circle cutter. Perhaps either gaskets or leatherwork but thats just a guess.
The box it comes in has the makers name - Hitz (German). Also, there seems to be something missing from the box (upper left side), any ideas what should be there.
cheers

Hello,
I would guess that thing is specialized in compass scribing and not to leave a mark in the middle with that leg option. The thing missing would be a spiked leg, but this is just a guess.
I wonder if that scribing tip is a carbide bit?

more info
the thing in the middle has three small but very sharp spikes. There are several spares of these spikes floating around in the lower right of the box. Obviously these would be very effective at preventing the tool from drifting around, but their small size and shallow protrusion mean they would not mark the material, whatever it may be.
Glass cutter is an interesting idea, but the cutter is a long, thin knife blade thing which would not be effective on glass.
Any other ideas????
cheers

I have a vague, almost nonexistent mental image that I would have some time ago stumbled on the brandname "Hitz" related with sheet metal industry, maybe with aluminium thin foils for silk screen printing or such. But I am not sure at all.
Only pointers I was able to find were one swiss industrial subcontractor and HITZ rims for automotive.
Anyway, if you take a piece of thin aluminium foil, you can easily scribe it with a carpet knife (deep enough but not through), and then just "peel" the parts off, like opening a can of brew. I wonder if that tool could do something like that, to make thin but wide washers or sealing rings, or other such items. Just a thought and not really knowing it.

Possibly used to cut circles out of card or mount board, as in picture framing... a lot of older style photo frames and albums had round or oval apertures. A pinprick in the centre wouldn't matter in the waste.
Gaskets material and cork are other possibilities, even leather.
Nice bit of kit, if only for display!

This tool looks very similar to one used to measure the flatness of surfaces at various distances from the datum point.
So I guess you could call it a flatness gauge.
Hope this helps.

Possibly a joint cutter for cutting joints for valves out of cork or rubber, by not damaging the the centre of the material you can use the left over material for smaller hand cut joints
