    Default Mystry hand tool

I have a question for all those collectors of antique hand tools, can anyone please advise me the name and the purpose of the tool that is featured in the attached photo"s.
This particular tool and a Stanley no 66 hand beading tool passed on to me by my father has been tucked away out of site in the corner of my garage for some 45 years and only last week I came across them during my annual cleanup.
It so happened that my attention was aroused to both these tools as on a few days later I had come across Derek Cohen"s web site and noted the subject " improving the Stanley no 66 beading tool and the making of new blades for the unit.
As my Stanley 66 beading tool is missing the blades I had nether ever considered using it but now my next job is to make some blades.
The mystery tool which is complete with blades has no brand name on it except for the 2 blades on which is etched the brand " Creston" followed underneath by 2 small circles with the letter of "H" in one and "P" in the other. There is also a size of 9/16 x 1 1/2 on each blade.

    Default Mystery tool

Thanks Slow6 I now know what the tool is used for. From the links I have established that the marking on the blade , those in the small circle are actually " E" & " P".
Now the question is how one would use it for running mouldings on the sash rails.

A few weeks ago I paid a visit to the local council tip and while there I rummaged through their recycle section and came across in a box of junk 1 hardly used or ever sharpened quite rusty 7 point Diston hand Saw. I casually said to the attendant with out showing to much interest " How Much", The reply was $2.00 , I could not hand over the money quick enough. I now have a restored practicaly brand new saw added to my tool box, plus the one I already had.

Sounds like a great find. Hard to beat those old Disstons

The E P makes your shave a preston.. I haven't done much with mine beyond trying them out on scrap but they are a breeze to use, make sure the blade is sharp and follows the pattern on the planes body fairly closely, set it for a fine shaving and away you go.. very much like a wooden moulding plane to use.

The few I have seen sell recently went for around the $50 mark.

The 66 is probably a much handier tool I reckon.. replacement blades are best made from old saw steel (there you go you can cut up your new Disston) as soon as I can be bothered to spend an hour with a hacksaw I plan to cut up a couple of dozen blank blades, having the ability to quickly file a custom bead for a job is a real bonus. I just never have the blanks at hand and cutting up handsaw blades with a hacksaw is a cruddy job.

lovely thing the 66.. treasure it

    Default 66blades

I do not like the thought of cutting up any of my saws , I think I will take Derek's advise and hunt up a suitable piece of a old band saw blade , failing that I was considering cutting up a old cabinet scraper particular one that has worn down to a narrow width .
Last time I looked I think Carb Tec were selling scrapers for about $10.00.
