My next project will be scales for a Samurai sword. I've been reading up on Harikari!

It would appear that my reliable source may have overstated the number of worthy posts made.

On a separate issue, can I reiterate the request for an "Unlike" button? Hmmm.. we already have one of those. I probably mean a "Dislike" button. I think I'm starting to understand the lack of good posts!

Nice work Paul, I'm liking the line... "One is always nearer by not keeping still"

Amid the poetry and dance I spotted some nicely made handles.. did you get around to fitting the blades yet?

    Eh.....no .

Both handles were prototypes so while I did experiment on the pine version with a stepped hole and did insert the blade, I did not fit it fully into the handle.

I have had a small disaster with the lathe which has slowed me up. As soon as I resolve that I will be back into it. I needed a new motor after I damaged the fan and then overheated the motor. I had a replacement motor, but it spun the wrong way. I had to take it apart to reverse the rotation ( single phase and not the easy job it is with three phase motors) and then in removing the variable speed pulley from the old motor, one half decided to break off so I am now juggling with pulleys and shaft diameters.

SWMBO said why don't you just get a whole new one. I think she meant lathe. For a while I was sorely tempted, but my usage is so small I find it difficult to justify the expense. I have some days off starting tomorrow so I will investigate my options. Carbatec may have replacement pulleys, but the indications are they are special order. I am waiting to hear back.

    It has been most frustrating.

Sounds like the best chance ever to buy summint else and describe it as a lathe or a lathe replacement. Come on man, get that creative thinking hat on.

We'll back you up (for a while, at least).

What make and type do you have? Might be able to help you out here as I have a variable speed lathe here that you can have the parts off if they suit.
    Cheers

If DJ can't help try a bearing place. I've bought pulleys from there before. Only a single but they had stepped pulleys in stock. Or just get a single pulley and whack a VSD on the motor. Go on, you know you want to.

It's a Carbatec MC900. It is old. Probably nearly 20 years. The motor is 1/2 HP whereas the modern version is larger. I contacted Carbatec to check if the replacement part was compatible with my machine but the person I needed to speak to wasn't there and was supposed to phone me back. That hasn't happened and I was unable to follow up today. I was planning to call again tomorrow.

The damaged pulley is one on the motor shaft. It is a two part device with fingers that interlock. If you think you have something that is compatible I would be quite happy to purchase it. I can send pix and dimensions of the old one if that will help.

This is a link to some general pix of the machine:

Either way, thank you for the offer.

You're right I do want to go down the VSD path and if that was the case I could fit a 3PH motor too, but I'd rather spend the funds on other machines first .

I have been checking out step pulleys and various other components I have floating around the place, but it is the old story that nothing is quite right and won't fit without modification. SWMBO's projects are backing up and i think her patience is running out when I appear after eight hours in the shed, grease over my face, a distinctly sour look and no good news/progress to report .

Still I will wade into the task again tomorrow.

Looks very much like the one I have sitting here, all I left is the headstock and motor, got rid of the bed and tailstock years ago, take some rough measurements and I'll see if they match what I have.
    Cheers

The pulley is 107mm dia with a 16mm hole. The dimension of the pulley on the motor is not critical as I can adapt. In fact I have to as I am using a replacement motor. Did you mention you have the motor too? The dimensions are not exact as I had mislaid my digital vernier guage and roughly measured with a ruler.

The pulley on the driven shaft is slightly larger at 115mm and had a 24mm dia hole. As yet I haven't damaged this!

    Josh,

Given that another month has gone by since your last post on this subject, how much progress has been made in the interim?

Just how far wrong is Ray's estimate of November?

    Hi Ray,

Josh and I have been away for a few weeks, but November is still the most likely schedule..
