Thread: Aldi micro planes

Um, these are kitchen tools, not shed tools. My wife uses these for grating parmesan cheese and vegetables. They aren't for wood, but maybe they would be suitable for sculpting foam, or something like that...

Actually these were shed tools before they became kitchen tools.

I've got one I got the last time Aldi sold them, works great on timber.

Yes I bought one, & you can use them on wood, & as Wheelin said you draw them to you. Got the long one 10in.-250mm. +-. Have used them before, & found them great, but better on softer timbers.

LOML bought herself a new one long fine cut which sits in a metal frame you can pop these blades out and turn them around.

I have enough of them

Microplanes were definitely woodwork tools until Leonard Lee (of Lee Valley) lent one to his wife for zesting an orange. After instant success, they moved the product into the kitchenware part of the catalogue. Sales went through the roof. Microplane HO then asked why is this one hardware chain was selling so many.
The rest is history.

Hi All,
I must see if I can change the handle on mine.
I have 2 other small ones that I use for a bit of Carving. 1 is ½in. Round, the other is ½in. Sq.
I bent the round one, so I straightened as best I could & stuck a bit of Dowel up the centre. Works OK.

These tools would be excellent for making furniture out of vegetables and could start a trend utilising steak knives, meat tenderizers, skewers and spatula's and such. I can envision kitchen cabinetry and buffets etc. being crafted and, perhaps even carriages being made out of pumpkins.

I give up. My irony is trumped by reality again. Being a smart arsed nark does not have the secret pleasures it did. Indeed it seems vegetables have become a new woodworking fabricating medium utilising carrot and celery sticks, potato wedges and chips, bean and pea frames, tomato trellaces and the like.
