Planes I've acquired
Through inheritance from my father and found left in a draw of a house we bought, I have become the owner of 6 planes.
1. A wooden Mathieson plane. Name is on blade, frog and body of the plane.
2. Stanley 90J rebate plane
3. Sargent 227 double ended block plane (between 1908 & 1918 by the inscription on the blade - has VBM in the inscription)
4. Stanley No.4
5. Stanley No.4 1/2
6. Stanley No.8
Unfortunately at the moment I know nothing about what each plane is used for. All need cleaning and sharpening as can be seen.
Can anyone assist with what you use each for and whether they are worthwhile doing up?

the 90j, 4 and 8 are really nice 1900ish.. Stanley doesn't come much better than that.
Keep the restoration minimal.. start with the 4 1/2.. you make grown men weep if you mess that one up.
Great score.

I'm in the same situation: Bought alot of planes and now I'm restoring them. There's an article in the latest AWR about restoring planes by Richard Vaughan.
After reading it and Majorpanic's thingy - http://majorpanic.com - I was off.
Have cleaned the rust off four of them just have to lap the soles and frogs.
Have fun Wood Worm, you'll have some really nice planes when you're fnished.

Aaahh... I wished from Santa a day off for unlimited rust hunting..
Wood Worm, how incredible that collection is. You could make so many kinds of things with those, starting from simple door fitting task without major dust puffs or deafening noises, ending up to finest woodworking there is..
As a woodie fan, to me that Mathieson is a beauty!
Stanleys and Sargent look really good, too.
They all have at the moment very stabilized castings (and wood), so they will keep their posture incredibly well, by default. They are aged, an there is really no equivalent heat treatment to do the same as time does.
Congratz!

Nice collection.
Reality is no background music.
