Stanley 501 Everlasting chisels
These Stanley 501 Everlasting chisels recently came up for auction on our local alternative to ebay. As much as I like them there they are just a little too rich for my liking (starting bid is R7500, about AUD775). I did a little search on google but couldn't find any info on them, which got me a little curious. Has any of you guys ever hear of these Stanley chisels? Seems like they are quite rare.

Judging by the set coming up for sale on MJ Donelly's site, I suggest they are a bit over priced.

However, I don't place a value on cardboard boxes, a collector might think otherwise!

It is my understanding that they are quite sought after in the US....

The seller doesn't ship outside South Africa, and isn't providing shipping at all on that set, they're listed for collection only, so there won't be many American bidders for that particular set.
Those ones on MJ Donnelly's auction have much shorter blades.
There was a similar set on ebay recently, in the US, bidding closed at just under $700, which was below the reserve.

So after a bit of homework, it seems that the 501 set was for Bevel Edged Firmer #20 Everlasting chisels.

Jim Bode sold a set of 12 of these in a roll for only a little bit more:

I knew that these chisels were coming up for sale - I've bought a few things from the seller, and he mentioned them to me, and even sent a couple of pics to my phone. I'll be honest though, I was expecting them to be listed at around R4000 - R4500. I have no idea what put that figure into my head, maybe something I'd seen on ebay, who knows? I was quite surprised when I saw that Jan was asking R7500 for them. I don't know enough about the subject to say what a good price for them is, though I do know they're out of my league

That set is in exceptional condition, if they are untouched - which appears to be the case from the labels. The price is probably realistic, bearing in mind that they are unavailable in the country (and would cost more if you added in shipping costs from the USA). Bear in mind, too, that they are collector tools only at that price, never to be used, otherwise the value will immediately drop. You could purchase some really good new chisels for the same money.
