It's called "over-kill", Paul.
Whatever floats your boat. Some people like to spend their hard-earned blinging-up old cars, or whatever, so why not put a bit of bling on the workbench, if it's your pride & joy? Personally, that bench would frighten me every time I walked into the shed, but I can't help admiring the effort that's gone into such a monumental work of art. Good on 'im!
Groggy - you are going to have to add a few racing stripes an a touch of chrome to your creation, now.....
Cheers,IW

It's a good tailvise, although it sticks out too far the way he has installed it.
The problem I see with his bench is ..
1. The skirt for the top is dovetailed on all coorners, which means there is no room allowed for expansion.
2. The top overhangs the legs, which will reduce the flexibility for work holding.
3. The face vise does not clamp against a leg, reducing its holding power.
4. The overhang at the front it tiny, which limits how much work one can clamp over the leg when wacking a board with a chisel and hammer, such as when morticing.
Otherwise it is fine
