    Default Unusual disston saws

    Hello folks.

The saws aren't so unusual but I am interested by the medallions. Unlike most medallions these are a white metal plated steel rather than brass. They also feature the keystone motif and Disston - Disston not Disston - USA or Philada etc. Im' guessing 1950s and maybe a cheaper line than the D12s and Acme 120s. One is a handsasw, the other a No4 backsaw.

I've checked out backsaws.net, Disstonian Institute and Vintage Saws and haven't come up with anything.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Virg.

PS Missed a Disston mitre saw and box on ebay last night. Sniped in the last seven seconds. Had a slow connection and couldn't update quick enough. Spewin'!!!!

These are saws made by H K Porter after the takeover by Disston. The handles are usually awful, but the steel is likely to be ok. I have reworked a couple of handles into a reasonably comfortable fit - you can of course make replacement handles.

You didn't acquire a 1904 mitre box yesterday did you????

    Cheers,
    Virg.

PS Yes, Peter, the handles aren't the nicest things. Quite blocky. Dunno if I should reshape or just restore. I'm loath to modify old things too much. Must be careful I don't get called a collector... (Counted 14 handsaws and 6 backsaws in my garage this morning. I've been building my kit for about 6 months. Do I have a problem?)

PPS Got the backsaw from a friend and the handsaw at the end of the last TTTG workshop on saw sharpening. Can't complain about the price.
