Veritas Carcass Saws
I was ordering some other gear from Lee Valley the other day, and stumbled on these little numbers:
Veritas® Carcass Saws - Lee Valley Tools
They look like a nice addition to their dovetail and crosscut line
Given that I was ordering enough for the saws not to affect the shipping cost much, I immediately grabbed the pair - that's a good deal for $100!
Has anyone used these new saws? Derek? Doesn't Rob Lee send you everything he makes personally now?

Actually I have seen some of the things that Rob has built, and he does a mean job!
Beeroll, I have not seen, never mind used, these new saws. However on paper the specs look very good to me. Just for comparison, my Eccentric Tools carcase saw is 11 1/4" long and 14 ppi crosscut - the LV is 11" long and 14 tpi. The Eccentric Tool saw now sells for $500. The Veriitas is $69.
The configuration of the crosscut teeth (15 degree rake, minimal set) indicate that it should be a smooth performer across the grain, which is ideal for tenon shoulders and other fine crosscuts.

If they are anything like the Veritas dovetail saws, these things are fantastic value for money !! I ended up getting both the 14 and 20 tpi dovetail saws, taking full advantage of our world-conquering dollar.....

You might not actually press "GO" on the machine, but it's probably fair to say that in some intrinsic way you "made" many if not most of the Veritas tools. Saying you didn't make them would be a bit like saying Raphael didn't paint the Vatican frescoes because apprentices did all the boring fiddly work for him...
And I'm glad you do, because Derek is the tool reviewer I trust most (not least because he made me my excellent shooting board ) So it's always great to see what he has to say about the tools you've sent.
And Rob? The tools I ordered on Thursday arrived here in Australia on Monday. I don't know how much you have to do with the day-to-day running of Lee Valley - but when I receive the kind of service, range and quality that is always my experience there, I really wish we had a store here that even came close.
BTW, yes, that means I have the saws . As soon as I have a chance, I'll unbox and post some photos...

Hi -
Thanks for the kind comments... we have a really good team here.
I really agree with the comments about Derek though...I trust what he says as well - which is why we've asked his opinion so many times during the development of a tool. It's important for us to have critical and analytical feedback on a new tool. Derek's in the fortunate position of not "needing" any particular tool - as is quite upfront in giving his opinions - which he also backs up with practise. That's not to say we always agree...but he always has good observations, and I have a tremendous respect for the work he does.
You're lucky to have him....!
Cheers -

Good on you Rob.
We wouldn't let you get away with blowin' smoke down here.
Agreed, Derek's opinions are valued, respected and always entertaining.
Well done to both of you.
All the best
Kevin

Yes: it's as well designed as the rest of your tools...
Without trying to be in any way cynical about it, that relationship is one of the best examples of the type of "marketing-via-social-media" campaigns that I've yet seen. And its success derives from the fact that it rewards all participants in the manner they most appreciate: you, with valuable feedback on your tool design, as well as marketing value; Derek, with VIP access to very cool tools, and validation of his experience and expertise from someone he respects and admires; and the rest of us with better tools and independent evaluations of them from someone we feel we know and trust.
The second part of its success, of course, derives from the fact that it probably wasn't ever conceived of as a marketing campaign, and never feels like one: it simply feels like an organic extension of the relationship you, Veritas and Lee Valley want to have with us woodworkers.
