jointer
I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has bought one and regretted it?
I thought long and hard before spending the cash on mine, but since then every piece of timber that has been used in my shed has gone over the cutters. I wonder now how I got on without one.Check my facebook:rhbtimber

I could not be without my jointer or thicknesser. I use recycle timbers as much as possible.

I got myself an 8" jointer a couple of years ago, and it's been a great tool. Everything is so much easier when you start with a flat edge and a flat face at exactly 90 degrees.
I've read some posts where people have aluminium fences that cause problems - I'd recommend a good cast iron fence that doesn't deflect.

I went for three items at the same time, jointer, bandsaw and thicknesser. I was only looking at a jointer and bandsaw at the time. The thicknesser was a last minute purchase as the price was very low at the time.
I am also looking at doing things by hand and that requires hand planes. Slowly getting there.

I have slightly regretted a jointer buy, but only because I skimped a little. I have machinery in two locations. It's not very smart, but that is how it is.
At one location I have a 24" jointer about 1800mm long. It is an ancient piece of equipment, but a jewel with mechanical, foot operated rise and fall.
At the second location I have an entry level thicknesser which I abuse until it overheats and stops on me and recently I purchased a small 150mm jointer about 1200mm long.
I found it difficult to justify another large jointer, but as you know a thicknesser without a jointer is only about half the job.
So I bought an older cast iron bench top model with three ph motor, which I converted to single phase (larger size motor).
But it is not long enough. Length is of the essence with a jointer and size does matter!
So I am now still looking for a jointer.

I bought the hafco pt161, not really having the money or the room for a bigger one, although now I could see the advantage of the long bed, where before I couldn't. I am able to straighten a 2.3m timber without too much trouble. I think though that would be the limit.
Being limited to 6 inches wide isn't really a problem because 95% of the the timber that I use is only 4" and besides, you would loose too much material trying to get the twist out of an 8" board over a reasonable length
I thought I would post just out of curiosity
