Jointing across the grain
For reasons which I'd rather not go into I ended up jointing with the grain on my 8" thicknesser (hmm - never done that before...). That is grain at 90 deg to teh fence. Result is a jointed board and a clogged 4" dusty line with 7.5 inch 'straw like' cuttings from the grain. Lucky I didn't have much to do, but I guess the lesson here is don't joint across the grain - or does anyone know how to do this?

what thickness were you taking off? i seem to remember from tech school teacher showing us the same thing of how not to do it(about 1mm?) then making multiple passes with thickness reduced to 0.2mm never had to do so myself and was long time ago was probably 1/16th inch pass and then reduced to what the minimum the jointer could do

Can you explain what you mean by jointing? I can't imagine how you could a) joint on a thicknesser and b) do it across (perpendicular to) the grain.
It must be some definition of jointing I haven't come across..."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."
