You'll never look back, we upgraded the thicknesser at work and can't believe the difference.

Well true to form the cutterhead arrived yesterday. It came from Seattle Washington state via Alaska, South Korea, China, Singapore to Perth.

To assist in its installation I've found this Generic 15 and 20 four post planers

The new Byrd shelix cutterhead is now installed in my Carbatec CTJ-381 thicknesser, and everything they say is true. The gearbox has always weeped oil. As part of the change over you have to get inside the gearbox and when I took the cover off I discovered the gasget is deformed. No wonder it was always wet with oil. Makes one wonder just how far does one need to go in checking over a new machine.

    Hi Rod,
I'm trying to do an identical install but have yet to get the bloody cutter head pulley off.
Have busted a chunk out of the rear channel as I must not have been using the gear puller properly
I have of course removed the retaining bolt but can't get the pulley to budge.
How did you get yours off?
I don't have space to get my gear puller feet behind the back of the pulley while the cutterhead is still in the machine.

Does that mean Byrd will ship direct to Australia even though they supposedly have a distributor here (RDG), or did you buy through some other channel in the US ??

Useful to have some total pricing including freight - I'd be looking for a Shellix to fit a JET JPT-310, so price would likely be about the same as yours.

Congrats on your new toy !!

    Cheers

Cheers Rod - I've been told that the Byrd head from Grizzly won't fit the JPT-310, so maybe I'll have to buy local after all....

    Hi Mr Brush

This should give you an idea of price for the JPT-310.

    Byrd Shelix Head for Jet JPT-310, JJP-12 12" Jointer/Planer - Holbren

Shipping internationally looks like it's done at cost.

    Hi Mr Bitslong

I too recently installed a new head (though into a CTJ-680). The pulley was a bit tight but came off with the puller. Have you tried all the usual persuaders - WD40 soaking, heat, hammer, bigger hammer? How much is a replacement pulley from Carbatec? If not too much you could get destructive. I had to do this to get the cutter head shaft out of the bearing in the gearbox. Wouldn't budge so got the dremel out and ground a hole in the side of the bearing. I then released each ball bearing out the side and separated the races. The inner race remains on the old cutter head and I had to use a cold chisel to persuade the outer race from the gearbox housing. Added a considerable amount of time to the job but the race made for a perfectly sized bearing seater later!

I followed the Grizzly instructions which suggested putting the new cutterhead in the freezer the night before the install to contract the metal. The bearings did seat easily on the cutter head but it then attracted condensation for the rest of the day. I'm not sure I'd try it if I was doing it again.
