I was quoted $1250 to replace the 3 blades on my 15" thicknesser with a shelix head. I have to take the thicknesser to their factory and they will fit and adjust the new cutter head for that price.

Any thoughts on whether this is this a reasonable price?

    Hi Skot,

I also purchased the Byrd Shelix cutter head for my 15" Thicknesser from Grizzly which cost me USD579.95 + Freight USD167.00 with an exchange rate USD.95 total cost was A$786.30 so I was happy with this purchase. I found fitting the head realy easy as Byrd have complete instructions on their web site which I down loaded and followed each step.
    hope this helps

    Regards
    Bern

Hi Bern - is your thicknesser also from Carbatec? If so which model cutter did you get?
    Thanks

Sinjin, if it helps to combine postage from overseas, I would also be interested in the details for fitting a spiral head to a Carbatec 20" Thicknesser.

Given the $1200 difference between the CTJ-508 single phase with normal blades and the CTJ-508X with spiral cutter head I'm sure it will be worth it.
I haven't bought the thicknesser yet, I will wait until the settlement date on my new shed with house

I also need a new jointer but it is only $400 more to buy the Carbatec 8" Jointer with spiral head (CTJ-350X) compared to the normal blades (CTJ-350) so I will probably just buy that.

I will go with Carbatec as I am in Launceston and they are the easiest solution.

    Jack,

I'd be careful of combining orders to save money on freight. I made that mistake once and took the total order value over $1000 and ended up paying duty on it, cancelling out any savings.

I've been watching this thread with a view to picking up a 15" thickie and adding the Shelix head. Carbatec just droped the price of the CTJ381 to $1349, same as the 680. Will it be cheaper still at the Perth woodshow in August? Will the dollar climb higher? Does anyone have a second hand 381 for sale? How many more cookery related reality TV shows do we need? Where's my crystal ball?
