Default Sherwood Standard Thicknesser + 1HP Dust Extractor - Good starting point?

I don't know too much about Thicknessers aside from everyone says to get a helical head machine, but those are a bit out of my budget for now. I was thinking of getting a Sherwood 13" Standard Thicknesser for $445 and since I don't have any dust extraction aside from a cheap ryobi wet/dry vac, a Sherwood 1HP Dust Extractor w/Pleated Filter for $433 as they are both currently on sale for what look like very nice prices.

Would this be a good starting point? It seems like that thicknesser can be upgraded with a helical head, is this correct?

I'm not sure what I need in terms of dust extraction, will the 1HP unit be fine for this machine? I'm unsure if I could run the 2HP extractor easily as I'm working on a residential circuit and am unsure if I could run 2 1500W machines at the same time.

    Thanks

consider the Dewalt 735 with 3 blades, it does a really good job

and you wont need a dust extractor, I have mine piped to a bag, seems to only spill a very small amount of dust

mine cost $800 S/H in as new condition with remainig warranty and extras

Of the benchtop thickies out there with strait blades the Dewalt 735 is about the best. It also has a chip blower so can hook up a hose to a dust bag so will not need extra power for a dusty. Also has 2 speeds of feed rate so you can do the last pass at a finer finish. Timbecon now do a spiral head that can be fitted to the 735. I fitted one the beginning of this year and I think it cost about $450 on special. The few years I ran it on strait blades it still did a good job. Strait blades are ok as long as they are sharp.

I would still want to buy a dust extractor though? Basically everywhere I search says it's highly recommended for a thicknesser or jointer. Or if you think I don't need one then I would just not get one with either machine.

the dewalt doesn't need a dust collector because it has a blower installed that removes the chips.

99% of other bench top thicknessers need a dust collector to remove the chips other wise it clogs up the machine and ruins the finish. If you don't have much other needs for Dust collector I would strongly consider the dewalt, and even if you have a slight inclinging of getting a unit with a spiral head, just buy it now. Don't plan on upgrading it later.

Oh I didn't realize that. I do feel like I'd want a dust extractor at some point, I have a Sawstop CTS coming soon and would like a jointer in the future too, so something to keep in mind, but I'll definitely look out for used DW 735s too.

I think the HD12 1 hp is a lot cheaper but ymmv.

    Just a moment...

But be clear that although it will collect most of the chips, it will not protect your health much. You will need another plan for that, (assuming you are working indoors at least some form of PPE).

    See the dust collection threads.

    Good luck.

    regards

Chips wont hurt you but the large amounts of invisible dust will so ALL thicknessers need dust extraction.

In this table produced by Bill Pentsz the Orange column is for chip collection.
For fine dust control I'd be working at a minimum with the Yellow Column.
This rules out the typically 1HP and stock 2HP DC.
A modified 2HP (see stick in dust forum) comes close and would be th emimium I'd be considering.
Note also the provision that the data in the table assumes replacement of stock hoods and ports/

this is my setup which works really well

before I piped it to a bag, I would roll it outside into the backyard when using it
it would spray the yard for about 5-6 metres in sawdust

I read somewhere that a lot of the dust extractors couldn't keep up with the DW chip blower and would cause it to clog or cut out

    good luck in your re/search
