1HP Carbatec Drillpress
Looking to invest in a pedestal drillpress & noticed Carbatec have a 1HP drill press on sale for AUD395.00. Anybody used one of these or have any idea of their quality ?
Carba-Tec® 1HP 16 Speed Pedestal Drill Press : CARBA-TEC
I know you get what you pay for but this will be used for woodworking only. I'm sure it will suffice & if the quality is not what I hope it to be I can return it.
Cheers,
Scott

It's a pretty standard woodworking DP and there are a lot of them out there doing a lot of work
BTW it does not really have a 1HP motor but a 650W. However it should still (just) make the claim of drilling 19 mm steel.
The speed range (120 - 3000 rpm) is good as is the price and with a 3 year warranty you can't really go wrong with it.
I would strongly recommend replacing the keyed chuck with a keyless so as not to ever worry about chuck keys again.

I have a much older version of the one you are thinking of, it's very good for woodwork and quite good for metal.
That said, my local men's shed has one of these.
Carba-Tec® ½HP 5 Speed Radial Arm Drill Press : CARBA-TEC
It has been a revelation for me with what is possible by having the head able to move back and forth as well as a tilt capacity on the head, instead of the table. Tilting heavy or long pieces of material is often not that easy.
Recently I drilled a row of holes at a 10º angle on a few strips of wood, then I simply moved the head further out then drilled the next row of holes.
With a home built drill press bed attached, it is quite easy to drill wide pieces of material up to about 400mm from the column.
If ever I could justify one, or one comes up at the right price, I would snap it up straight away.
Mick.
