Default Hare and Forbes Drill Press

I needed a drill press to accurately drill pen blanks. For years I have drilled them on the Mini lathe.

Did my research and due to the limited range in WA settled on the Hare and Forbes SBD-20B. Picked it up for $260.

As I have ruined my back, my son did the assembly, and a mighty fine job he did as a 15yo (Edit- Please note the safety boots. At least I wear safety accredited Crocs when in the workshop).

One problem though, the switch was faulty and would not allow the drill to run continously. Hare and Forbes must be aware of this as they freighted one out to me within two days and I was able to fit it very easily, a little disapointing though.

The drill runs well and I am very happy with it, despite the switch problem

    Sincerely
    Willy

    Thumbs up

Bloody good apprentice you have there Willy!!

I have that same drill and find it pretty good. The light globe I replaced with a fluro that gives more light. Its still not good and I have read throught the threads here on how to solve this problem. Will be going LED!!

The drill is not good with smaller diametre drills, so I will get a special adaptor chuck to solve that problem.

    Willy,

I have the SBD 25A and did the mod to change to dual LEDs on flexible arms. Much better than the singe 60watt bulb.

As Artme said the chuck doesn't hold the small dia drills. I got a keyless chuck plus a MT2 arbor from McJing tools so I can just knock out the other a put in the keyless when drilling holes < 2mm.

Also got a 4" cross slide vice. This make positioning the work piece accuratley a dream.

Least you have an apprentice, my two are the greatest hinderance in the workshop. But I still love them being there.

Disappointing about the switch but at least is was rectified quickly. Good luck to you.

That 4th photo, the one on the far right, looks disturbingly like DIY dentistry...
